Our friends at the Gallery of Modern Art in Queensland have given us a copy of the 'Drawing Life for Kids: My Art Journal' to give away. The journal is inspired by Matisse's love of drawing and contains over 100 pages of activities.

My daughter (aged 10) uses her journal in bed before she goes to sleep. The book contains beautiful images and questions that prompt children in using their imagination and thinking outside the box of their everyday life. GOMA - Matisse | Pip & Pop | Yayoi Kusama

Last week we were in Brisbane visiting family but we also managed to fit in a visit to the Gallery of Modern Art.

Matisse - Drawing Life
This is an impressive exhibition that features over 300 works on paper by Henri Matisse and is the most comprehensive exhibition of Matisse's prints and drawings ever mounted.

My youngest son (aged 8) was not very keen but my daughter (aged 10) who loves to draw any moment she can get was fascinated with the simple lines and shading Matisse used to create beautiful drawings.

My son did gain interest when we entered the Drawing Room, a large scaled studio. They both grabbed a board, art paper and pencil to sit amongst other artists to draw just like Matisse. There are also a selection of interactive tablets available to draw upon and email your finished artwork to family or friends. The studio is filled with sculptures, furniture, still - life arrangements and models - plenty of
inspiration.

Yayoi Kusama | Look Now, See Forever
We first experienced the vibrant Japanese artist Yayoi Kusama at the MCA with her exhibition Mirrored Years in 2009. This new exhibition, Look Now, See Forever features new work by the artist that all families will love.

Giant shiny pumpkins greet us as we enter (very tempting to touch - but not allowed), blooming flower sculptures look over us as we pass by and Dots Obsession again tempts us to touch the giant balloons.

A favourite for everyone was the Obliteration room - a completely white room that encourages children to fill with multi-coloured dots. Kids will enjoy being part of this installation and not being restrained from touching. We had a lot of fun finding spaces for our dots.

Pip & Pop | we miss you magic land!
My daughter and I visited the Japan Foundation 2009 exhibition "Under the crystal sky" of this talented Perth-based duo and we were delighted to see that we could experience it all again. GOMA commissioned Pip & Pop (Nicole Andrijevic and Tanya Schultz) to create a new sugar coated world. 'We miss you magic land!' is absolutely beautiful.

My kids loved moving from one area to the next and discover the sugary lands and inhabitants. Children can also lay down on a mat to take in the creations hanging from above. At the end of the exhibition they have the opportunity create their own virtual magic land online featuring themselves running around in the world of of Pip & Pop. My children are still using the interactive game at home to create new worlds.

Stage Fright! | New Theatre

Great school holiday entertainment can be hard to come by but you will not go wrong with Stage Fright! playing at the New Theatre. Stage Fright! was written by Richard Tulloch (The Book of Everything) almost 20 years ago based on the stories of Paul Jennings (Round the Twist, Unreal!, Unbelievable!) and still stands the test of time.

Tulloch pulls together a selection of Jennings quirky tales with an amusing story involving three school children trapped in a 'haunted' house. The cast successfully take on multiple roles to bring the stories of Jennings alive including Skeleton on the dunny, Lucky Lips and The Copy.

Stage Fright! isn't scary but will have the whole family (adults included) laughing out loud. For me, the afternoon brought back memories of going to the theatre when I was a child. My kids and I enjoyed this show and we highly recommend it.

Circus Oz | Steam Powered

Over the holidays we jumped on a bus that led us to Darling Harbour to catch the latest production of Circus Oz - Steam Powered. This circus is not as shiny as Cirque Du Soleil but it is the raw qualities and boldness that wins over the audience.

The voluptuous ring mistress, Boss Lady (Sarah Ward) attempts to keep her family of misfits in control whilst the live band (my teens favourite element of the show) provides the perfect soundtrack for this rambicious crew. Circus Oz does a wonderful job of showcasing the skills of the whole troupe. Expect slapstick, physical performance, acrobactics, dangerous feats (we wanted more danger!) and the best magic act they could afford, The Hammond Brothers (my favourite). Our other favourite, Flip Kammerer stole the show as fitness instructor "Fantasia."

It is not very often you see a performance with such an eclectic audience. In front of us were 10 teen girls celebrating a birthday dressed to the nines, young and old couples and families with excitable kids.
To pull off successfully entertaining a broad audience for two hours is a feat in itself!

My night at the Opera | The Magic Flute

On Tuesday my Mum and I had an evening out together at the Opera. We went to the Sydney Opera House for a performance of Mozart's "The Magic Flute." I have been to the Opera House for kids shows before but this was much more special.

I like to listen to Opera on the radio in the evenings before I go to sleep and the last few weeks I have been listening to the CD of The Magic Flute.

We arrived at the Opera House early so we could get a drink in the foyer and I also had some chocolate. There were a lot of other families there as well. When we went into the concert hall it was completely full and our seats had a great view of the stage and we could see everything that was going on.

I thought the singing was inspiring and the costumes were so divine. The puppets were oversized, colourful, fascinating and everyone seated near me enjoyed them. The set was huge and it moved around for the performers and to show different scenes. Sometimes it was difficult to understand what was being sung (even in English) but luckily you can read the surtitles (the words appear on a small screen above the stage) but I found it more enjoyable just to listen and take it all in.

The story is about Prince Tamino who is saved from a serpent by three of the Queens helpers. When they go off to tell the Queen a bird catcher called Papageno bumps into the Prince and takes the credit for saving him from the snake and they become friends. When the three ladies come back they put a muzzle on him so he can not talk as punishment for lying.

The Queen sends them both off on adventure to save her daughter Pamina from the cruel Sarastro. Tamino is given a magic flute and Papageno silver bells for a safe journey. There are also three spirits that guide them. But there are some twists and Prince Tamino and Papageno face many dangers but find their way to a happy ending.

The Opera runs for two hours but you get to have a break half way and can go outside, enjoy the view and have a chat.

After the performance even though it was way past my bed time we had a drink and some dessert at the Opera bar outside and listened to the jazz band playing and talked about our night at the Opera.

I think The Magic Flute would be great for kids who are five and older and families who want to have a special night out with their kids.

The List Operators - Kids do Compooters | Sydney Festival 2012

The List Operators - Kids do Compooters is exactly what school holiday entertainment should be all about - silly, disgusting, hilarious and plenty of poo jokes to keep the whole family happy. My two youngest children (10 and 8) and I did not stop laughing throughout the opening performance of this fantastic show within the Sydney Festival family program.

The List Operators take on Cyberspace and everything floating within it featuring plenty of audience participation to keep the pace going. The game of Pong has never been more exciting. Matt Kelly and Richard Higgins are masters at captivating a whole audience, both kids and adults.

Kids do Compooters is so much fun and once word spreads expect it to be difficult to get hold of a ticket.

Flickerkids - Flickerfest 2012

Last weekend we headed down the road to check out what Flickerfest had on offer for kids. Based in Bondi Beach, Flickerfest has grown to become Australia's only competitive International Short Film Festival with entries coming from across the globe.

Even though it wasn't what you would call cinema weather there was a great crowd of families attending - some even had their swimming gear ready for a dip after the screening. The session screened eight shorts with a fantastic combination of animation and live action. Films represented were from Australia, United Kingdom. Norway, Germany and the USA.

My kids favourites were:
The Itch of the Golden Nit
A BBC production that involved thousand of children across the UK contributing drawings, sound effects and story ideas.
and Australian productions Toot Toot and Play lunch.

The Kids at the House 2012 program has been announced. We have seen some real gems over the last years of the program that caters for families young and old and the 2012 program does not disappoint.

These are our picks for the year:
White (22 - 26th Feb)
A production suited for younger audiences introduction to theatre (2 - 4 years) from Scotland's Catherine Wheels Theatre Company.

Escape from Peligro Island (19-28th April)
My kids have always loved the "Choose your Adventure" books. This takes the same concept and lets the audience choose the narrative of the play voting with their own remote controller. *No two shows will be alike!
This exciting production was written by Finegan Kruckemeyer. Many families may have seen his beautiful piece "Boats" at the Darlinghurst in 2011.

An intimate puppetry experience by Danish theatre Company Teater Refleksion.

My kids have always loved LEGO. We keep a large box of random pieces underneath our lounge room table that gets pulled out on a regular basis when they are bored and keeps their younger cousins happy on visits. It is always interesting to see what they create without the LEGO instruction guide.

If you have LEGO fans at home they will love the Art of the Brick exhibition arriving in Sydney from December 12th. The exhibition features the amazing LEGO artwork of artist Nathan Sawaya.

"I use LEGO bricks as my medium because I enjoy seeing people's reaction to artwork created from something with which they are familiar. Everyone can relate to LEGO since it is a toy that many children have at home and one that adults have a sentimental attachment to." Nathan Sawaya

Rocks Moonlight Markets

This is a fantastic find. The Rocks have gone to a lot of trouble to provide quirky and fun entertainment for everyone, in a family friendly environment. Plus there are stalls and pop up shops for present buying.

Arran and I had a great time. It started with a street lined with chamber musicians, which led us to explore a couple of laneways.
Next we were enticed into an intimate (secret) laneway performance. So we can't tell you what we saw! There are a few shows and they last for around 3 minutes.

After that we passed through quirky book readings to the puppet theatre which alas, was not age suitable for under 18's (which they did tell us before we went in).

We were even a little spooked by the curious tent, as we hadn't taken along a present ... Enough said, again, you need to see it for yourself.

In between grabbing a bite to eat from the market stalls, we also had a boogie at the silent disco, watched some swing dancing and live music in the square. Plus there were Hula Hoop lessons and hairdressing and makeup.

It was such fun. We are going back next week and have even booked in for a hairdo! Apparently next week is "Urban", the look this week was swing.

A great, fun way to spend a few hours. Definitely worth a visit.

Forgot to mention, all the activities, except the puppet show were free. Absolute score for the Rocks!

Harry Potter Exhibition at the Powerhouse Museum

We were hugely disappointed with this exhibition, overpriced for what it was - and to add insult to injury they tried to overcharge us!

A family of four is $96 at the door and we paid $84 for 2 adults and one child. We tried to make our visit stretch, as I was keen to get my monies worth, but I am afraid (it was not crowded when we went) it took a little over half an hour.

The props are detailed, and it is interesting to see the costumes and some scenery. There is a little drama at the beginning of the exhibition with the sorting hat and train.

For Potter fans there isn't really any interesting behind the scenes stories. Indeed, some of the explanations look as if they were written for people who don't know anything about Harry Potter.

Our recommendation is that you save your money. This is disappointing and the merchandise is overpriced as well. $5 for a a chocolate frog! Though you can buy Bertie Bott's beans, they are $5 as well.

A BIG new discovery

We have only just discovered the beautiful kids magazine "BIG" - Bravery, Imagination and Generosity. The magazine explores children's interaction with art and collaboration with artists and with probably the youngest senior editor in the world (Luca is 8 years old!).

Each issue has a different theme with the current issue being - First flight. So expect beautiful illustrations, photography, poetry and workshops including - how to make a flying bird animation.

Kids can get involved by submitting their own artwork and register to be a part of the child artist response project and can submit ideas for upcoming issues.

My daughter devours the magazine as part of her night time reading in bed before she goes to sleep. My boys haven't had a chance to look at it as she has claimed it as her own. BIG can be shared amongst the whole family (adults included) and archived to bring out later for inspiration.

Outpost | Cockatoo Island

We are planning to check out Outpost at Cockatoo Island after friends came back from the Opening weekend raving about the event. Over 4 weeks until the 1oth Dec - Outpost will transform the island to a wonderland of urban art with the help of 150 artists sourced from around the world.

There are plenty of kids programs to make the trip for the whole family worthwhile and you can also pick up a kids activity guide or take a family tour.

Pack the camera in for the kids so they can explore and document their discoveries.

Flying Monsters - IMAX

My kids and I went along to a screening of the film, Flying Monsters at IMAX. The 3D at the IMAX is a very different experience to the 3D films that we seem to get bombarded with every school holidays. Flying Monsters combines 3D with CGI technology which makes you feel as though you are in the film. The quality of 3D is amazing.

Flying Monsters takes you on a journey from two hundred and twenty million years ago to the present with Richard Attenbourogh as your guide to discover why lizards the size of giraffes once ruled the sky.

What I loved:

My kids are getting entertained and also learning something new about the world.

What my kids loved:

The 3D and the feeling of being able to fly with the 'monsters'.

If you have younger kids or kids that wriggle, the length of Flying Monsters is perfect- 45 minutes.

Flying Monsters runs from the 11 August at IMAX Darling Harbour.

One of the members of the creative team for Wolf is Finegan Kruckemyer who wrote "Boats" that we were lucky to catch at the Darlinghurst Theatre over the holidays. This production celebrates the power of fairy tales, storytelling and the role that fear plays in our lives.

Art and About 2011 are after children aged 3 - 11 years to capture Sydney through their eyes in the kids version of the photography competition and exhibition - Sydney Life.

Little Sydney Lives has been introduced to celebrate the 10th Anniversary of Art and About Sydney.

The top 20 photos will be enlarged and exhibited in Hyde Park as part of the Arts and About festival from 23 September to 23 October.

Entries close 22nd July - so make the most of the school holiday time and get the kids out of the house to snap away.

When my daughter (aged nine) and I walked away after the performance of Boats at Darlinghurst Theatre on Monday I wanted to walk back in and wrap my arms around it. Yes, we loved it.

Boats is a beautiful performance that shares the inner workings of storytelling for children and adults. The story follows the loveable Jof and Nic and their journey in life following the sea and love.

Written by Finegan Kruckemyer and directed by Frank Newman who both have a history of intelligent and creative theatre for families - Boats incorporates puppetry, music and physical performance.

Throughout history, robots have come in all shapes and sizes and have been created to make our life easier and lazier. In the school holidays, older kids will be introduced to robots who are more than meets than eye and a young boy who wants to find out why.

Aleksander and the Robot Maid at the Seymour invites families to delve into the steam punk world of robots, friendships and mysteries.

When Aleksander journeys to the hallowed city of Robotika he is captivated by the technological marvels of the Steam Age. Lured by the promise of a life of leisure, the people have been liberated from work by the box-headed Industrials. But all is not as it seems.

We enjoyed the performance but my son (aged seven) dropped in and out with some parts not grabbing his attention but overall he gave the performance the thumbs up. I think my ten and thirteen year old may have taken more away from it. The highlight for my son was the large robot at the end.

+ After each performance kids can help create a giant robot, this is great fun and something the kids can also do when they get home with spare boxes

+ Wonderful characters and a sense of adventure as you enter the world of robots

- The performance is a little bit too long at 70 minutes for younger audience members, recommended age group is eight and over

Hairspray - Welcome to the sixties

My daughter (9 years) and I like to spend time away from the boys in the house and have a girls night out once a month. Last week our "night out" was at the musical Hairspray. The evening was alive with an air of excitement because this was going to be her first musical and we are fans of the original John Waters film.

The story is set in 1962 Baltimore and Tracey Turnblad is a 'pleasantly plump' teenager who achieves her dream of dancing on a local TV dance show. Tracey uses her new found popularity as a platform to encourage intergration and makes some enemies and new friends along the way.

The cast exudes an energy that keeps the audience captivated during the two and half hour show. The set has a personality of its own and consists of giant LED screens that animates replacing traditional props and backdrops, allowing scenes to change instantly and keeps the musical fast paced. I found the screens at first overwhelming but I soon adjusted to the style.

The colours are vivid and bright, costumes are flamboyant and bold and the dancing and singing spectacular. Stand out songs for us were the energetic, "Welcome to the 60s" and "You can't stop the beat".

When I asked my daughter what she thought of the show she said, "Mum, I didn't like it... I loved it!"

The performance runs for two and a half hours with a 20 minute interval
The 8pm performance gave us a late night and if you are the taking the kids the matinee would be better suited.
Performances contain strobe lighting, stage smoke, fog effects, LED screens and theatrical smoking
The audience consisted of musical aficionados, families, couples and groups of friends young and old.
If you want to see the movie before the performance - the John Waters original version is a lot of fun! (rated PG)

The Great Bear | Sydney Film Festival 2011

The Great Bear is a Danish animated film screening at the 2011 Sydney Film Festival. The feature follows the relationship between 13 year old Jonathan and his younger sister, Sophie. Like most childhood sibling relationships, Jonathan does not want to have anything to do with his sister.

Jonathan and Sophie take a long train journey to stay with their grandfather on the school holidays and is warned on arrival to stay out of the dense forest that lay beyond his land. A little door on the wall saves Sophie from her brother during a chase but brings her into the forest where she disappears with a 1000 year old bear. Jonathan takes on the task on rescuing his sister from the forest, which has its own dangers and delights.

The Great Bear was directed by Esben Toft Jacobsen. Jacobsen wanted to create a Nordic fairy tale with the film. "Something appealing and scary and epic at the same time. A magical dimension that lies within nature, in the rocks, forests and animals." source

The animated landscape in the film is beautiful and grand. If your kids like movies with a dash of scare factor (like mine!) and lots of adventure, The Great Bear is a wonderful cinematic treat.

Sydney Film Festival 2011 | 8-19 June 2011

This morning the Sydney Film Festival announced its full line up for the 2011 festival. I love giving my children the opportunity to see films that lets them see the world through other childrens eyes. A highlight in the family program is the Australian Premiere Africa United. The film follows three Rwandan kids and their journey to the World Cup with dreams of auditioning for the 2010 opening.

Also screening in the family program children can experience Sammy's adventures - The secret passage and Danish film The Great Bear ( English version). The trailer for The Great Bear looks wonderful. You can find more about The Great Bear at the Danish Film Institute.

Jack Black and Lucy Liu will be walking the red carpet for the Australian premiere of Kung Fu Panda 2 3D on Monday 13th June.

There are a selection of wonderful films within the full program but most of these are classified 18+ and due to the OFLC policy under 18's will not be permitted into the 18+ classified screenings.

Every child is an artist - Picasso

When my eldest son (who is now 12 almost 13) declared to me at the age of 3 that he could not draw ...I boosted his confidence in his drawing skills and he produced a drawing of spiderman lifting weights, which to this day makes me laugh.

Kids have an ability to draw with humour and freedom we lose as adults.

My two youngest have just rediscovered Ed Emberley. In a springclean, the Jumbo drawing book was found hidden away in our collection of books. If you have a child that is not confident in their drawing skills or one that wants to learn more - Ed Emberly is your man. He shows in basic step by step how to create fun drawings with easy instructions.

Ways to encourage your little artist:

Have a drawing time after dinner, dont judge just enjoy
I gave my kids a small spiral notebook to write down ideas for drawing (it had string that went around their neck) so it went with them everywhere.
Take them to exhibitions
Encourage and Inspire
Always have pencils and paper on your main table...they will be attracted by it
Make space on a wall for a gallery
The more they draw the more they love drawing

Born to be Wild 3D | School Holidays | Review

The kids and I ventured out for the evening preview of Born to be Wild (and yes in 3D!) at the Imax in Darling Harbour. School holidays means the onslaught of kids flicks and these days...3D kids flicks. We have seen the good, bad and the ugly. Thankfully, Born to be Wild fits into the good category.

The documentary captures two women (Dr Birute Galdikas and Daphne Sheldrick), living in different countries with the same mission, to nurture and release back into the wild the animals orphaned by mankind (elephants in Africa and the orangutans in Asia).

Beautifully shot and narrated by Morgan Freeman, the documentary pulls at all the heart strings. Visually, this was one of the most incredible 3D films we have seen, we actually felt we were there amongst the animals in the wild.

Running only at 45 minutes Born to be Wild may be too short for adult audience members hoping to get more of a story but for kids I found it to be the perfect timing.

This is not be missed over the holidays if you want to avoid the usual school holiday fare.

* Just avoid the snack bar where the portions of popcorn and drinks are way too big for a kid of any size.

Japan - Kingdom of Characters | Review

I think that every kid in their lifetime has fallen in love with a Japanese character. My eldest son was given a set power rangers as a gift from Japan ten years ago. When he walked into the Kingdom of Characters exhibition the oversized Ultraman was what first grabbed his attention. My daughter was drawn to the Hello Kitty room display and my youngest son grabbed my camera to start taking photos of everything.

The exhibition traces the history of Japanese Characters throughout the years and their impact on Japanese society through large storyboards covering each century.

If you are already in the city with the kids it is worth popping in. Take your camera as the kids will love getting their photos taken with the oversized characters. If you have teenagers that are into Anime - there are free screenings and talks that accompany the exhibition. The Japan Foundation Gallery is situated in the Chifley Plaza - next to the food court.

The only disappointment was that my friend Anapanman was not present!

The exhibition runs from the 8th April until the 28 May 2011.

Me and my shadow | Review | Sydney Opera House

My kids have always loved playing with shadows at night on their bedroom walls, they love the ability to create fictional characters in their own world with a simple torch.

This school holidays at the Opera House, Me and my Shadow takes shadow play to the next level with the delightful story of a girl who through creative play befriends her shadow. The performance conceived by Patch Theatre explores this friendship by magically playing with various visual elements that kept the audience enthralled. The simple yet effective set allows the audience to focus on the magical delights.

The Creative Play area can also be explored before or after the performance in the foyer to enhance your families visit to the theatre.

Me and my shadow is ideal for 4- 8 year olds (although, I also had two 10 year olds with me who enjoyed it) and is at the Opera House this school holidays until the 17 April.

I went along to the launch for Vivid Sydney this morning. Vivid Sydney celebrates light, music and ideas and this year the festival features an abundance of exciting interactive and visual experiences for families throughout the city.

I love that kids are encouraged to interact and play with the over 25 light installations. My kiddos are going to go crazy with the Public Art Pencil designed by artists Paul Johnson and Gail Mason. It is a giant sketchpad installation with a laser light to draw with. The Jellight (pictured) lets kids grab the tentacles to keep them from floating into space. Each night throughout the festival the city will transform into a "spectacular outdoor gallery."

Other highlights of the festival include the Fire Dance and the Lighting of the Sails, also the music element of the festival includes a family performance from YO GABBA GABBA!

Adventures of Alvin Sputnik Review - Sydney Festival 2011

It is really wonderful when a performance piece enthralls a young audience as well as an older one. Weeping Spoon Productions (Perth based) succeed with the beautiful tale, "The Adventures of Alvin Sputnik - Deep Sea Explorer" performed by the multi talented Tim Watts.

My youngest son (aged 7) and I fell in love with Alvin and his underwater journey to save the world (now a world covered in water with minimal land and survivors left) and reunite with the soul of his wife who has recently passed away.

Creator and performer, Tim Watts uses animation, projections, puppetry and singing to bring Alvin and his entrancing story alive.

This performance is one of my favourites from the Sydney Festival 2011 line up.

Power Plant review - Sydney Festival 2011

The Chinese Gardens at Darling Harbour plays host to Power Plant, the amazing collaboration of UK artists: Mark Anderson, Anne Bean, Jony Easterby, Kirsten Reynolds and Ulf Pedersen.

Power Plant is a fun and exciting evening event for families. My daughter (aged 7) and I followed the path through the gardens to discover a wonderland of light, sound and visual creations.

What we loved:

Eerie sounds coming from Gramophones, psychedelic flowers spinning in the night, the inaccessible red glow and strange sounds from the temple, fire dancing on the water, luminous lampshades guiding the way, hidden snails in kaleidoscopic garden.

2 Dimensional Life of Her - Review - Sydney Festival 2011

2 Dimensional Life of Her is a multi-dimensional real-time artwork, incorporating drawing, animation, projections, puppetry and performance from Brisbane based artist/performer Fleur Elise Noble.

This is an intriguing performance piece that breaks the boundaries of storytelling and immerses the audience into Fleur's world as she attempts to control her imaginary world from taking over and causing havoc.

My children (12, 9 and 7) were all captivated as drawings come to life from the paper filled room. My youngest son looked over to me during the show and whispered, "How does she do it?" As we were walking out his eyes were sweeping across the set trying to discover the secrets behind the production of 2 Dimensional Life of Her.

I have a feeling this performance experience will stay with my children (and me!) for a long time.

Snow on Mars - Review - Sydney Festival 2011

Richard Tulloch and Kim Carpenter (Theatre of Image) have teamed up again for the Sydney Festival for their wonderful production "Snow on Mars."

The story centres on 12 year old Waylon (physical performer, Rick Everett) who wants to be an astronaut but his father has other things on his mind. Waylon's mother has passed away and he travels from each caravan park to the next with his supportive Nana and country singing dad around Australia. The story explores family, following your dreams, friendship and the beauty of space.

I went to the performance with my son (aged 7) and his friend. The acrobatic and aerialelements and the creative use of the large screen were the highlights of the performance. One of the favourites for the boys was a spectacular scene when the Ghost Astronaut walked across the screen the stars exploded beneath his feet. Amongst the excitement of the multimedia and movement their attention span did waver during some parts of the story.

If your child has a love of space, astronauts and/or acrobats! they will enjoy Snow on Mars.

Last night my two youngest (9 and 7) with their Dad and Grandad went to the opening evening of the Le Grand Cirque - Adrenaline at the Opera House. They all have not stop raving about the show. From their awe of seeing a performance in the beautiful Concert Hall, the strength of the cast and the overall excitement of the whole show .

The show is an action packed evening featuring a cast over 40 of the most extreme athletes from around the world. Highlights include the Globe of Death motorbike act and the Wheel of Destiny.

This is a show not to be missed!

Mirazozo - Architects of Air

The large sculpture seen in the forecourt of the Sydney Opera House is the magnificent work of Architects of Air.

The Mirazozo luminarium is a walk through experience that incorporates light, colour and sound. The journey of this labyrinth includes four domes, tree space and tunnels, each bringing their own experience.

You can hide away in the pockets or stare into the dome centre and let it take you away.

What I loved most was it is an experience that be enjoyed by any age. It was wonderful to seeing young children crawling around discovering the radiance of the Mirazozo.

Charlie and Lola's Best Bestest play ever opened today at the Sydney Opera House. Most families are familiar with the wonderful BBC series and books of brother and sister and their imaginative world. This charming production by Watershed Productions brings the siblings to life with a magical mix of puppets, live action and music.

The performance which lasts just under an hour consists of three stories within Charlie and Lola's world. Laughter filled the audience with mostly under 5's, some even shouted out to Charlie and Lola on stage as they would to a friend.

Our whole family loved The Book of Everything at the Belvior on earlier in the year. So we are very excited to see that Richard Tulloch and Kim Carpenter have teamed up again for the production of Snow on Mars. The production will incorporate aerial, actors, music, song and digital animation.

12-year-old Waylon (physical performer, Rick Everett) wants to be the first man on Mars.

From a country caravan park, he writes letters to his hero, Andy Thomas. It seems impossible that Waylon could ever become an astronaut. His Dad (Elliott Weston) and Nan (Deborah Kennedy) move around so often that he is falling behind in his schoolwork.

Waylon getting into NASA is as unlikely as finding snow on Mars.

With the help of his Nan and local girl Gabi (Danielle Jackson), Waylon throws himself into the challenge, entering a project about the difficulties of landing the first man on Mars.

They discover that, although dreams may not necessarily come true, there is much joy and excitement to be had in reaching for them.

Alive and Kicking - OTYP

The youth in Hay have had the opportunity to learn and explore drama, dance, stop motion animation, sculpture, puppetry, creating landscapes from recycled materials and photography under the guidance of OTYP Artistic Director, Mandy Field.

Workshops have been held in various locations around Hay after school and on Saturdays, during the school holidays and in schools with a huge variety of work created. On Saturday the 4th Dec this work will be brought together in an exhibition and performance where young people will share their talents and creativity with the community.

Saturday’s event will include live performances by young people and the puppets they’ve created, films and dance videos made by the young people and displays of sculpture, photography and landscapes. This will be a day of colour, music and life in a celebration of what it is to be young in this community.

My daughter (the budding artist - aged 9) and I got to trial the new Art Academy from Nintendo. The lesson starts of with basic techniques that get you used to using the tools and progresses to more detailed drawing and painting techniques with the help of a animated guide. I found the pace quite slow but my daughter enjoyed going through each new level.

The software also has the ability of taking photos with the new Nintendo DSi and using the images within the free paint mode and there is a very good selection of brushes, pencils and paints to use.

After my daughter went through the lessons on the nintendo we moved her to paper with her pencils and paints to translate what she had learnt.

Overall, she found it be a fun way to learn some new art techniques and over time would probably develop her skills.

Entries for the junior Tropfest opened Tuesday 12 October giving filmmakers aged 15 years and under an opportunity to show off their talents and walk the red carpet for the first time.

There are great prizes up for grabs this year including a digital video camera, educational filmmaking experiences and fame! Trop Jr finalists will have their short films screened at the Domain in Sydney ahead of the iconic Movie Extra Tropfest event on Sunday 20 February 2011.

There are model trains, areas you can test out the Thomas the Tank Engines and model toys. It has a great range of stuff for all ages from jigsaws, lego to Sylvanian families. Their speciality is model kits and trains, but a treasure trove for kids as well.

Sutra an amazing piece of theatre, where East actually meets West in a beautiful marriage of dance and movement. This is a great piece for kids aged over 8. There is incredible movement and lots of action to keep younger audiences engaged. Not to mention the fascination of the 8 year old novice monk on stage.

Flemish/Moroccan choreographer Sidi Larbi Cherkaoui presents a brand new dance work inspired by the skill, strength and spirituality of Buddhist Shaolin monks.

A collaboration with Turner Prize-winning artist Antony Gormley, who has created a design consisting of 21 wooden boxes which move around the stage, are used by the rubber limbed Labi to create illusions, for climbing and for domino like effects.

This is a fabulous piece of theatre, definitely worth catching and another indication of what some investment in the arts can produce. Sadly its hard to imagine something of this scale being created in Oz, as we just don't make this kind of investment.

Currently at Sydney Opera House, but only for one more day.

Brisbane-based artists Alfredo and Isabel Aquilizan’s project, In-flight (Project: Another Country) 2009, asks participants to make aeroplanes out of found materials. Using the recycled objects as well as off-cuts and twine, participants are invited to construct aircraft within a dynamic activity space. Touching on themes of migration, family and memory, the recycled planes form a giant flock suspended from the ceiling.

School will never be the same after children experience Sutee Kunavichayanont’s ‘classroom’.

Turning school tables upside down and conventional ideas on their head, the artist’s carvings of animals, buildings and people combine different cultural sources, encouraging children to look at familiar things in new ways and to think about how different cultures might interact. Children can participate in the artwork by making rubbings of all the carved surfaces.

Living Library at Sydney Children’s Festival

Carriage Works Living Library is looking for beautiful, interesting, inspiring books.

Many of you will remember that as part of the Sydney Children’s Festival last year, we ran a program called the ‘Living Library’. For those of you who have no idea what I’m talking about, see below:

In a Living Library, readers borrow out books in much the same way as they would in a traditional library, with one important difference – the ‘books’ are real people. The idea is that readers (in this case, the children of the Festival) can ‘borrow’ a book for a short amount of time to hear their personal story, enabling them to hear tales of people with lives very different from their own.

Right now, I’m looking for people of all ages, cultural backgrounds, and from all walks of life to be books. We’ll be enlisting kid’s ‘dream job’ people like firemen, doctors, vets and astronauts if we can find them, as well as people with quintessential ‘Australian Stories’ - people who have migrated to Oz and seen the times change; someone from a tattoo parlour in The Cross covered head to toe in ink; a blind person talking about how they experience the world; and actors and storytellers who can pull the kid’s legs with tall tales and jokes.

Simply put, everyone has a story to tell, and no-one knows how to tell your story like you do. It doesn’t have to be wild and wacky (although it certainly can be), just something from your life that you feel makes it unique.

Whilst it’s clearly not for everyone, volunteering to be a Book has the potential to be a distinctly rewarding personal experience, as well as a generous contribution to the young community. With your help, we can create a safe environment for kids to interact with a huge range of people who they normally wouldn’t cross paths with - and what better way to promote awareness and acceptance of diversity?

The time commitment isn’t huge - at least one of the Library sessions for a few hours on either the 2nd or 9th October, as well as a short info session in the week prior - so if you think you’d like to be involved, contact me for more details.

If it doesn’t sound like your cup of tea, PLEASE forward this to anyone else you know who you think might be interested.

This is the type of event that really needs personal recommendations to work, so I appreciate any assistance you can give me with that.

I reckon Polly Stenham must have had a pretty twisted childhood, or else she's got a huge imagination. Her 2nd play is recommended for 14 years plus and definitely has themes more suitable to this age group and older touching on sex, madness, abuse and perhaps not quite so proper family relationhips.

Three kids, 15 year old Eliot, 14 year old Maggie and 7 year old Finn have moved house and their mother has gone missing. The play is has witty and poignant moments, though it does lose a little pace in the second act.

Having said that, its worth seeing - offering food for thought on family dynamics

The kids and I went to the preview of Hubble 3D at Imax theatre in Darling Harbour. The Hubble is a space telescope that brings down images of the Cosmos to Earth. This footage follows the astronauts of the Atlantis STS-125 crews mission to go up to the Hubble to repair the telescope.

This is an amazing 3D experience for kids who have a interest in space. My youngest son got a little bored but my 12 and 9 year old loved the film. The quality of the 3D really brings you along on the journey.

Hubble 3D will screen at IMAX Darling Harbour from 12 August 2010. The film has been rated G

As part of the activities for Sydney design they had a pop up card workshop at the Powerhouse Museum.

We had great fun at this one and started off with a paper hat, origami cranes and then we moved onto cut out 3D cards and finally pop up stick on 3D cards.

We managed a really cute dog and a sea serpant. If Benji does these workshops again, it is really worth going along.

The pop up cards workshops are finished but there is a whole range of kids activities in Sydney Design which are worth checking out. Of course, the Powerhouse also has lots of all ages friendly workshops and exhibitions.

Gruppe 38 return with Hansel and Gretel

Danish theatre company Gruppe 38 are returning to Sydney with their adaption of Hansel and Gretel. My son and I saw their wonderful production of The little Match Girl a few years ago and I have already booked the whole family in to see the new show in August.

The darkest of The Brothers Grimm fairytales is brought to hair-raising life using storytelling and stunning visuals in this enchanting re-working. Accompanied by an onstage musician, the narrator seamlessly transitions between the characters of Hansel, Gretel and the evil witch as she magically illustrates the tale using light and projections.

Brother and sister, Hansel and Gretel are abandoned in a forest. They stumble upon a delicious gingerbread house that is owned by an evil witch who secretly wishes to eat them. They eventually escape and are reunited with their father. This tale of this abandoned brother and sister is about fighting against life’s difficulties and distinguishing between good and evil.

Screen it | Film making and game design Competition

Registrations are now open for Screen It, the national competition for school aged filmmakers run annually by the Australian Centre for the Moving Image.

As well as filmmaking, students get to strut their game design skills in the Computer Games category. There is a large range of software available for making video games. Some popular free software includes Yoyo Game Maker, Adobe Flash and 3D Game Maker.

The competition is open to anyone enrolled in primary or secondary education and students can enter through their school or independently. Entries can be live-action films, computer games or animations, but must incorporate the theme of The Environment:Who Cares?.

After a season at the MOMA New York, The Tim Burton exhibition has arrived in Australia. My daughter and I headed to Melbourne to check it out. Even before you step through the doors of the exhibition you know you are in for a treat with the displays that surround the entrance at the ACMI.

Inside, the Exhibition is full of wonders that have filled the mind of Tim Burton since his school years, "Surviving Burbank" to his latest film "Alice in Wonderland." There is so much to see and take in including illustrations, figures, costumes, and rarely seen short films.

The Burtonarum will delight all ages, a carnival tent buried deep in the forest which feature glowing Burtonesque creatures and little peep holes. You will glow as well.

If you are taking young children, take the kids exhibition trail which sides steps Sleepy Hollow and other films that they may find too scary.

We both loved the exhibition and found it very inspiring.

My family and I fell in love with Lillebror and his family. Twigson is a Norwegian film based on the children's books by author Anne-Cath. Vestly. Having to move to the country to cut down on expenses the youngest of the family, Lillebror is bored with the lack of children around to play with. He does encounter from a distance "the princess," a young girl the same age as himself. Lillebror is sent outdoors after he falls through the floor of their falling apart house, where he find a new friend "Twigson." (a twig that has fallen from a tree his father is cutting down) Twigson provides Lillebror the company and friendship he craves for. This is a very beautiful family film for younger children (who can read the subtitles) and older children. Twigson is a film full of adventure and humor and the positive moral theme of never giving up.

The final screening for this film is on Monday and I highly recommend you catch it.

Yona Yona Penguin | SFF review

My son and I headed to our first film at the 2010 Sydney Film Festival, Yona Yona Pengiun. I was a bit concerned when I was told the film would be subtitled as my son is learning how to read and did not want him to feel overwhelmed.

Yona Yona Penguin is a delightful anime and my son only needed a few translations to keep him onto to the story.
Coco is a young girl who fantasises about being a pengiun who can fly. A new friend - Charlie, lures Coco to the Goblin village believing that she can help them save their village. Yona Yona Pengiun encourages to believe in yourself and the importance of friendship. The film gently covers the theme of missing a family member who has passed away.

My son told me to give this film 5 stars.

My son and I celebrated the Gruffalos 10th Birthday last year at the Seymour and he is returning over the School Holidays for a repeat performance. This show is great fun for kids over 3 and their families and worth catching over the holidays.

CLOSING ON SUNDAY 11th APRIL - OLAFUR ELIASSON

This weekend grab the kids and head down the MCA to catch the wonderful exhibition from Olafur Eliasson - Take your time.

Suitable for kids of all ages this exhibition explores light, shapes and colour in an interactive environment. When we first walked in the kids rushed to the large communal table filled with small pieces of white lego and constructions that had been built by creators before them. Every room within the museum captures the imagination.

This is not to be missed!

About the Exhibition

The MCA presents the must-see contemporary art event of the year, Take your time: Olafur Eliasson. Gathering works from major collections worldwide, it spans Eliasson’s diverse career from 1993 to the present, including installations, sculpture and photography. It is the first large-scale exhibition of works by this Danish-Icelandic artist to be presented in Australia.

From light-filled environments to walk-in kaleidoscopes, Eliasson’s unique, experiential works explore the intersection between nature and science, and the boundary between the organic and the artificial.

Raised partly in Iceland, Eliasson has drawn his inspiration from that country’s landscape and spectacular weather. He recontextualises elements such as light, water, ice, fog, arctic moss and lava rock to create works that shift the viewer’s consciousness and sense of place.

FOX is an internationally acclaimed book for young readers written by Margaret Wild and illustrated by Ron Brooks. In 2010 the Monkey Baa team will present an outstanding adaptation which opens at the Seymour Centre in April 2010 before a 30 week national tour.

The haunting text is set to music by Daryl Wallis and the action of the story is presented through a series of poetic visual and striking physical images. Beautifully designed and imaginatively conceived this is a story of friendship and courage.

A Golden Ticket to meet Tim Burton

The Australian Centre for the Moving Image (ACMI) is hosting acclaimed filmmaker and artist Tim Burton for the opening of an exhibition of his works in June and is seeking young Australians to be Tour Guides, which also includes the opportunity to meet the man himself.

ACMI’s ‘Tim Burton Tour Guide’ opportunity is open to under 18’s across Australia from today. Applications must come in the form of 3 minute videos.

Successful applicants will meet Tim Burton, be inducted by ACMI staff, hear from curators about how he created his art and films, and then take the public on a tour of the exhibition on at least one occasion.

Tim Burton opens on 24 June and will run until 10 October 2010 at the Australian Centre for the Moving Image in Melbourne.

The Arrival - Sydney Festival -Review

Red Leap Theatre magically brings to life Shaun Tans graphic novel The Arrival during the Sydney Festival season.

In this wordless production we see a man leave his oppressive country to set up a new life for his family in an unknown country. We follow him on his journey where at first he is lost, wandering attempting to decipher new languages, foods and rituals. Along the way he meets other immigrants who befriend him and guide him in his new life and we also learn of what horrors have forced them to flee their own lands to this new one.

The Arrival is a beautiful piece of theatre that incorporates an ingenious set design, puppetry, dance and physical theatre to tell this universal story of overcoming hardship.

Some parts of the story may go over the heads of children under the age of 8 but they will still enjoy the visual beauty of The Arrival.

The Book of Everything - Review

My son (aged 11) announced to me on Sunday that "The Book of Everything" was the best play he has ever seen. There are so many elements in this production that will win many hearts during the season at the Belvoir.

Adapted from the novel by Dutch author Guus Kuijer, The Book of Everything tells the story of Thomas, an imaginative, curious and sometimes scared nine year old boy. Thomas documents his life and how he sees the world through his eyes in his Book of Everything.

To escape the oppression himself and his family endure from his over pious and abusive father, Thomas finds comfort that comes in the form of chatting with Jesus, falling in love with the girl with the leather leg, learning about the beauty of books, overcoming fear from his new friends and writing in his Book of Everything.

References to Emil and the Detectives will delight readers of the novel by German author Erich Kaestner.

Kim Carpenter's set design is an absolute knock out and fills the stage with wonder. The interaction between the cast and the audience is fun and lures you right into Thomas's world. We fell in love with Julie Forsyth as Mrs Van Amersfoort, Matthew Whittet as Thomas and John Leary is hilarious as Jesus. The whole cast were all wonderful.

Suitable for adults and children> The Belvoir recommends audiences aged 8 and over - If you have younger children the domestic abuse scenes and themes may be too confronting.
